Yin and Yang in Your Birth Chart

Most people know yin and yang as a symbol on a flag or a tattoo. In saju it is a working part of the machine: every stem, every branch, and therefore every day sign carries a polarity, and that polarity changes how the sign behaves.
Two people can both be Wood and still run on visibly different settings, because one is Yang Wood and the other is Yin Wood.
The cleanest way to think about it: the element is what the energy is, polarity is how it moves. Yang moves outward: expressive, direct, initiating. Yin moves inward: receptive, subtle, sustaining. Neither is stronger, better, or gendered; classical texts describe them as phases of one motion, like exhaling and inhaling.
Ten stems: five elements, two editions each
The five elements each come in a yang and a yin edition, giving the ten heavenly stems. Tradition attached a vivid image to each pair, and the images do a lot of interpretive work:

So when a BaZi reader says Yang Wood and a Korean reader says gap, they mean the same tall tree. A Yang Wood person and a Yin Wood person both want growth; the tree grows through what blocks it, the vine grows around it.
The animals have polarity too
The twelve branches alternate as well: Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, and Dog run yang; Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, and Pig run yin.
And here is the elegant bit: a yang stem only ever pairs with a yang branch, yin with yin. That pairing rule is exactly why the cycle has 60 day signs instead of 120. Every sign is polarity-consistent from top to bottom: a Green Rat is yang through and through, a Blue Pig yin through and through.
What polarity does to chemistry
In a compatibility reading, polarity sets the volume of the pairing.
Two yang signs together tend to run loud: fast plans, big gestures, occasional collisions, since both sides initiate. Two yin signs run deep: long conversations, slow trust, an entire relationship legible only to the two people inside it. A yang-yin pair gets the classic complement: one pushes, one steadies, each covering the other’s blind side.
None of these is the good one. Loud pairs get things moving, deep pairs keep things alive, mixed pairs keep things balanced. As always in saju, the reading describes the dynamic; what you do with it is yours.
